Hey guys, I bought my first boat this fall...1973 Evinrude 135HP Model# 135383M. The boat had not been run in ten years, starts very hard (45min to an hour) I checked the fuel tank (needs to be replaced) it was full of varnish. I removed the pickup filter and put two inline filters in. This has helped me ensure no more damage until I get my new tank, but am pretty sure the carbs could use an overhaul. While looking online for rebuild kit I see there is a 135hp crossflow V6. How do I know if this is me? (what is the crossflow?) I don't know diddly but I'm trying. Thanks.

Welcome to Iboats, Navgunner!

Your engine is a crossflow. The looper V-4s didn't come out until the mid-80s. And anyway the only looper 135 I see is a 1999- V-6 Ficht.
Your carb kit should be OMC P/N 439076.

I'm pretty sure there's no such thing as a 135hp crossflow V-6?

Crossflow vs Looper, what does it mean? Click here.

PS - good plan on rebuilding the carbs. No sense smoking a piston or two if you don't have to. :) You're also going to need to replace your water pump - they go bad just sitting around.

Thanks for the response! I bought a SELOC manual, which seems to give pretty good explanations, but any idea how I can identify replacement parts...such as the water pump you mentioned. Before I took the boat out I had a mechanic give it a once over and a compression test (150lbs on all cylinders) he seemed surprised! He put it in a tank and said water pump seemed fine. I have read they go bad, so I guess being proactive would be the way to save!
