Carb kit

After searching through the forums, I think the reason I sometimes have trouble starting is my carbs. I have a '76 merc 1500, and don't know when the carbs were rebuilt last. I plan on ordering the engine manual, but I was wondering if there is anyway to go ahead and order a kit or something as well? I have no idea what a rebuild consists of or even how many carbs I have!! Thanks for any help.

Re: Carb kit

Others may feel differently but.... Unless it's dumping fuel through the needle seat, I can usually tear down clean and replace without parts.

It might help if you can isolate the issue as to weather it's a lean or rich problem that is occurring.

Usually what is required is cleaning or clearing the small passageways in the jets and carb body. To do so requires they be removed, disassembled, and closely inspected. All passageways are then blown free with compressed air, or aerosol carb spray, while viewing for flow similarities from one carb to the next that might indicate something amiss. For severely hardened deposits it may require careful probing with a wire while not marring the soft metal surfaces.

How does it idle?

Have you tested the compression, and what is it?

How do the spark plugs look?

Re: Carb kit

Tiptina, All 150HP (all inline 6 for that matter) are hard to start. If the motor idles acceptably, accelerates and runs at high speed correctly, your carbs are fine.

PS I have a '77 Merc 1500. I find high speed performance to be mostly related to quantity of fuel. The motor will only run at top speed if the fuel pump and primer bulb are working efficiently.

Re: Carb kit

I have owned a few I6's and all were hard to start! Even after total rebuilds. They need to get turning real fast to fire.
What is a hard start(to you)5,10,20,30 sec?

Re: Carb kit

I never continuously crank for more than about ten seconds. It usually starts the fourth or fifth time. It runs pretty good, every now and then, when you go to hammer down for a hole shot, it will try to sputter and almost die, until you let off the throttle. As for starting, once she's been started, she usually cranks right up without even hearing the flywheel engage!! Any ideas, I wanna be cruisin for the Fourth!!!!

Re: Carb kit

check compression
check fuel pump
check for hot spark
make sure fuel lines are not cracked or sucking air
check idle mixture screws, mine are 1 1/4 turns out from gently seated, read my other posts, my motor runs like new, starts in 1 second, maybe about 3 seconds when cold.

somebody here told me that before starting, push throttle ALL THE WAY FORWARD, opening butterflys all the way.. THEN prim the heck outa the motor with the fuel bulb, put it back in nueatral and then start it, these inline 6 motors need tons of fuel to start.

but get a manual and a carb kit. it will make a huge diference, especially the manual

oh yeah, i forgot to mention my new favorite word... Re: Carb kit

Sorry, this is my first boat, but how do you check those things?? The fuel lines seem okay, but I don't know how to check the rest, and where is the "idle mixture screws"???

Re: Carb kit

I would suggest that you go to NAPPA auto parts store and buy a couple cans of SeaFoam and run through your systems. SeaFoam does a good job of cleaning unless you have crud in the small holes/passages. Check my post in FAQ for decarb and try that. A clean engine will run and start much better, especially with fresh fuel.
