I have a 1979 Mercury 4.5hp outboard. I have verified the year by the serial number. I am looking for a carb kit. Here on iBoats they do not list my year. They list the 4.5's in 1980-1985. They list the 4hp 1 cylinder (which mine is a 1 cylinder) but none of them include the year 1979.

Now I notice there is only 2 carb kits available for motors up to 6hp, but I want to make sure I get the right one.

The carb has MERCARB 1399-5808 stamped on the bowl if that helps any.

Also, I cannot get this thing out. I took out the two nuts holding it in, but there isnt enough room to wiggle the thing out cause the bowl is so tall it hits against the side. I ordered the service manual yesterday and dont have it yet, but just wondering if someone can get me some pointers to get me started.

Re: Carb model?

1399 is normally the designation for a tillison carb, if thats the case it would use the 18-7013 kit. The carb should be stamped either KB or KD 10A somewhere on it. The only other way to be sure is order a gasket kit and both inlet needles that the only differance in the 2 kits.

Re: Carb model?

Just an update on this thread in case someone has the same problems someday. The choke assembly has to come off first, which gives the carb more freedom to move back, so it can come off. The carb turned out to be a KB model, stamped on the side where it was not visible until it was completely removed. Thanks.
