I have a 26' carver santa cruze, very heavy boat, with a 350 chevy marine, and a quadrajunk carb. it sat for a while, while i was working 7- 12 hour days, and then i got back to it and am having an issue, she wont get over 3200 rpms, not enought to brreak a full plane, as i bring the throttle up, she does fine till i hit about 3/4 and then dies down. any ideas other than a new carb or full rebuild?

Re: Carb probs

well i rebuilt the carb, now the prob is worse! now i only can her to 2700 rpm! I think it has to do with the secondarys opening too soon? the problem is like a switch runs perfect up to 2700, and then if u push a mm past it the rpms drop and never come back. any help would be apprecatied as i am no quadrajet man, gimme a SS E or super B and i can fix it! lol

Re: Carb probs

Those quadrajets are tricky. How careful did you "rebuild" it? Did you buy a OEM kit from Merc? Or is it Sierra? Did you follow all the rebuild instructions per a mercruiser manual?

My little 2BBl Mercarb was not as difficult as your Quadra, but still rebuilding a carb is like surgery. You can't miss any detail and you must work clean and careful.

Re: Carb probs

I'm no boat guru but I know my chevys. 350 small blocks will run GREAT with anything up to a 750 double pumper on em! My suggestion.... Go to a scrap yard and pull a carb off Monte Carlo or Camaro SS or a 1983 Trans Am with a 305. Spray it down with carb cleaner, bolt on, and go! Old chev pickups also sometimes came with 4bbl carbs on top of a 350 4 bolt main. Any of the above 4bbl carbs will give you the gas you require.

Re: Carb probs

If you like to live....don"t do what Meance told you to do. You could end up blowing up your boat and killing you and your loved ones.

NEVER use a Automotive carb on a boat! NEVER. The Automotive carb vents into the atmosphere, thus filling the bildge with fumes. Add a spark to this situation and by-by birdie.

A marine carb vents into itself so fumes do not fill the blidge. Even still you are to run your blower for 30 seconds atleast before starting up your boat after it has sat a while.

Never use Automotive Starters & Alternators as well.

Re: Carb probs

:Dok found the prob, it was 2 fold! First the arm that lifts the secondary metering rods was bent slightly and one rod was higher than the other, after carefully bending it back into shape i was able to get 3200rpms, then after a quick dive overboard i found barnicals on the outdrive and prop, scrapedthem off and prob sloved, she jumps right up on plane! thanks for the help guys!
