Carb question 1975 Merc 9.8

I'm troubleshooting a 1975 Merc 9.8. I believe I found some gasket material in one of the jets, but after I reassembled the carb I tried blowing air through the carb with the float up and down. I can do it but it takes more pressure then I expected. It's been a while since I've done this on a carb and maybe it just seems tough because it's a smaller carb. Any feedback before I toss her back in?
Thanks, Carl

Re: Carb question 1975 Merc 9.8

if any doubt in mind, take it apart again and go over the jets again, inspect them closely, maybe put a new fuel pump kit on (the fuel pump is on the side of your mercarb) make sure everything is flowing evenly, but to be sure, id drop the bowl and hit the jet again and make sure there is absolutely NO gasket material in the carb whatsoever, also be sure to get a new gasket from carb to engine intake, remember the fuel pump is run off a small hole on the intake manifold and u need the right gasket so the suction from the crankcase can run your pump, you can re-install your old one, but its better if you put a new one on..... if you look at your carb to where it bolts on the motor, you will see 2 holes the one at 4 oclock runs your fuel pump, and the one at 10 oclock is your low speed channel

Re: Carb question 1975 Merc 9.8

Ok hey thanks ! I've cleaned all my jets and anything else on the carb with carb cleaner and compressed air. I checked the diaphram and it appeared ok. I've done it before on dirt bikes but when I blew air through it to check if my float was working it seemed easier before. I could tell it was working on this boat carb, but I had to blow my brains out. I'll go thru it one more time. I expect it may just be because the jets are so dinky.
Thanks again ! Carl

Re: Carb question 1975 Merc 9.8

I saw the two holes on the carb. I think they were at about 4 oclock and 8 oclock, but there was only one hole, at 8oclock I think, on the manifold? I had the gasket off so I'm sure there was only one. I took it to the lake and got it running but I could only start it in forward with the throttle on full. It was a little hairy....lol. I have new plugs and wires on it. One wire was bad. I tried adjusting the fuel mixture screw while on the lake and I think it helped. I'm going to check the timing as soon as I can find some info on it. Oh, compression looked good too. It's probably something stupid, I just have to pinpoint it. Hey do you know if it's possible to throw your timing off by yanking the bottom end? I had some trouble getting it back on after replacing the waterpump impeller and seals.

Thanks Carl
