Hi all new to site. have been looking and reading alot of post. Very good info on this site with very usefull info. I have one question i have a Holley carb that was on the 81 Checkmate 305 v-8 898 mercruiser motor when we bought it. i would like to rebuild the carb after reading alot i mean alot some one said the number for the carb should be on the airhorn so this is what it said List-3310-2 and on the secondary diaphragm cap the numbers are 0185 d1 10 p2 do not know if this means anything. If any one could tell me the type and size of this carb this would help me greatly. Thanks for any info

Re: Carb Question???

Not only is the 3310-2 NOT a marine carb, at 750cfm its WAY too big for a pukey little 305. Replace it with a Edelbrock #1409, and make sure the distributor, starter, and alternator and fuel pump are also marine, if not change them! The life you save could be your own! (and avoid a $5000+ Coast Guard fine!)

Re: Carb Question???

Thanks for the warm welcome! Ha Ha. No realy thanks for the info. That was the carb on the boat when we bought it and everything else is marine on the boat. The guy said it was given to him in trade for some work??? Well now i can explain what was wrong with the boat. it would pop back thur the carb after 1/4 to WOT. So we had replaced everything from points, cap, plugs ,wires, coil, timeing, carb adjustment. to no avail it kept doing it. so i decided to take off the valve covers and low and behold the # 6 Exhaust valve not opening. looks like the lifter is calapsed. Also ruled out the cam becouse the # 5 Exhausts opens and closes completley. I just thought i would let every one know my findings so they would have another option to look at if they were having the same issues. I read alot of info on the poping from carb subject and everyone said it was lean at the carb. there were a few that said it could be a valve not working and they were right, a Exhaust valve would cause this not letting the gas excape and push it back to the carb. Again thanks i will post a new post on my results when we have the motor back running. Happy Boating

Re: Carb Question???

FYI when you change the lifter, besure to turn the engine a bit with the new lifter in place before you close it up.. just to make sure the LOBE on the cam isn't destroyed. There was an issue in the mid 70's 305 CAMs... the metal was a little soft. ( i think.. ) I had a couple lobes on a '77 Monte Carlo Cam go flat.

That was all small block Chevys not just the 305. It was, according the Chevy factory reps, bad oil. The additive added to 10w30 to make it 10w40 broke down prematurely and wipped out camshafts. I worked for Chevy garages back then. Most of the cams that were bad was caused by bad oil, or should I say the owner NEVER changed the oil. Warranty paid for most of the job but the bad ones paid extra for several hours of sludge cleaning. Funny, I never heard of other manufactures having this problem. For Chevy to pay for a cam replacement at 100k miles, kinda admits fault. Sorry for getting OT.
