i have a merc 115 6cyl been having fuel problems & got a lot of help in diagnosing the fuel issue from this site. I have done the test to see if i am getting air in my fuel line & it came up clean. I went ahead & disassembled the fuel line & check the ball checks & they all are functioning i noticed some debris that appears to be from the rubber seal at the fuel tank connection had polluted my primer bulb i went ahead & started the motor w/muffs and it fired uo the fastest & best it ever has. I know that does not mean much as far as a load test but i am still having my primer bulb be somewhat restricted and collapsed while priming the engine to start although it pumped up very well but never got " hard. I figure the next step is to clean the carbs as i am sure some debris has found its way inside. I am curious as to whether i missed a step in the diagnostic end if not any advice or directions to links on removing and cleaning the carbs including the welch plugs. Any info sent my way is, as always much appreciated

Re: carb question

You say you checked the ball checks--do you mean the check valve in the primer bulb? I was having fits trying to diagnose my fuel problems. Turns out the check valve in the primer bulb had come apart, which is why I couldn't prime the carb and get a firm feel to the bulb. Sometimes the loose piece would migrate to the motor side of the bulb and block the fuel flow. A $15 new primer bulb has solved the problem. First time that has happened to me in almost fifty years of outboarding. Good luck.

Re: carb question

thank you fiftiesoutboards i have suspected the prime bulb as being a major factor the check balls are secure as far as a rattle test but have noticed the bulb itself is well worn and has lost a lot of it firmness all the rest are shutting and opening fine. I am attemting to replace it but believe it or not the 4 marine supply shops i have looked at have been out of stock on merc 3/8 bulbs ( 2 marine shops & 2 wal marts ) i am going to bass pro shop in a few minutes. Thank you for the info will let everyone know how it works out
