Hello, I have a 1988 sunbird with a 4.3ltr GM motor and omc cobra drive. It used to run great. Now it will barely plane occasionally shooting forward running like it used to for just seconds. I checked all electrical parts, okay. I done a fuel pump volume test, okay. The boat had sit for a couple years without running and I was told by someone that I should consider rebuilding the carb, that gas may not be going through it properly. I have never rebuilt a carb before but I am mechanically inclined and I can read a ruler and understand instructions, but I am starting to wonder if I am in over my head when I started reading about making adjustments such as float drop. I purchased a kit from a local dealer which didn't come with the gasket between carb and intake. The gasket split in half when I removed the carb, it was a clean horizontal split. The gasket appears to be very thick, half on the carb and half on the intake. I have read not to use an auto gasket but could I use several autos or reuse the one on my carb? No one has been able to tell me what the differences are. I suspect that the thicker marine gasket acts as an insulator from the heat of the engine. I thought rebuilding the carb would be as easy as replacing the parts in the kit and leaving all adjustments as is. Can anyone offer any advice to a first time carb rebuilder?
