Carb rebuild clean Question

I am rebuilding my carbs for the first time and have a few questions. What should I do, some say the parts should be soaked overnight in a solution to fully clean, where as I have read people say that mercs have a film on them and they should not be soaked it will remove the film and just spraying is enough. The DIY article someone linked it says to just clean fully with the carb cleaner can (with red straw)

What is the proper or best method to clean the parts? Can I just spray them with cleaner, wipe with rag and then hit with compressed air? Should they be rinsed in water before compressed? What do you guys do for a method?

Lastly, whats the deal with specific torque? The manual specifies torque but they are for screws and the torgue is in inches. All the torque wrenches I see are larger for bolts and in lbs. Whats the way everyone does it. Do I just get everyhting tight? If so how tight?

Any other tips or advices for a rookie

To torque itty bitty screws, you use an itty bitty torque wrench. Yes, they make them. Some even look like a screwdriver.

hope it helps

Re: Carb rebuild clean Question

I've just rebuilt two of my carbs(got one to go). What I've done is after having taken the carb apart is let the parts sit over night in a gallon of carb cleaner (I picked up a gallon of carb cleaner at a local auto parts store). Then take out all the jets and I cleaned them with some steel wool rolled tightly to clean the jets inside. I also used steel wool to remove any gasket bits that didn't come off. Finally rinse in clean solvent and dry with air compressor.

What about the film on the carbs? Will it take that off? Can you just spray it and clean it? Or does it really need to sit overnight.

Also does it have to be torqued to specs? Those screws drivers cost about 150 and up? Hard to justify for a carb rebuilt. What is the downfall if not done? Can it just be tightened?

Should the jet come completely out or can I just spray through it?

Whats your take on the torque? Does it need to be exact? I don't have access to a torque screwdriver?

Do must people torque everything to spec?

get them snug but do not overtighten and you will be ok, yes take the jets out and i like to use a piece of wire to run through it as well as carb cleaner and compresses air. i have never heard of a film on the carbs

haha too funny. :) After they are cleaned should the still feel a little tacky? I didnt soak overnight but let them sit in carb cleaner for a while then rinsed off in water and the dried with compressed air. I noticed the bottom of the fuel bowl seemed a little tacky is that normal?

Do they need to be scrubbed at all?

Re: Carb rebuild clean Question

I have been told by two different mechanics from two different shops not to soak Merc carbs. I have also read that here. The golden color is an anodizing substance sprayed on the carbs. I believe it helps with ethanol in gas. We only have E-10 ethanol gas available here in Colorado. I soaked the small parts in mineral spirits and used spray carb cleaner in the bowls and scrubbed with a rag. Finished with compressed air. I believe the difference in the cleaning technique is the 10% ethanol in our gas.

thats what I had read too. Not to soak them. So you just wiped them with a rag? Do they feel slightly tacky after they are dried?

Whats your take on the torque? Did you torque them. Many people say your fine just don't over tigthen them. Just a little leery. But I think I will just get them equally snugged tight.

Snugged up will be fine. You would be surprized at how much torque you can create with just your hand and a screwdriver.
