HEy guys...just got through rebuilding both carbs on my 1975 mercury 850 outboard...new floats and new fuel pump kit as well...anyway, after i got done and fired her up she started right away and sounded good but was at EXTREMELY high idle ?...idle stop screw made no difference ...then i got to messing with the distributor ...magneto plate ? ...now it wont start at all...also would a crossed wire between the switch box and the rectifier cause the very high idle.....thanks

Re: carb rebuild problem

I am not an expert on this, but my guess with your hi idle is that something went wrong during your carb rebuild or you have a vacuum leak.

Have a great day,

Rob.

Re: carb rebuild problem

I used to train field engineers (computer stuff). The hardest thing to get them to understand is this:

If you walk up to a running machine, do something to it, and it now does not work.

WHAT YOU DID IS WHAT BROKE IT.

when you go somewhere else, like run diagnostics, you very likely will introduce a second problem that only makes things worse.

Good luck backtracking.

Re: carb rebuild problem

thanks for replying john....thought i might have to go back and take everything back out . It was a real simple rebuild though...nothing much to replace except the inlet needle and seat and making sure the spring on top of the floats was at the correct length.

Re: carb rebuild problem

That motor needs to have +12V DC on the red wire on the switchbox at all times. When the ign switch is on, the white wire on the switchbox will have +12V as well.

As with your other post, it is possible that the idle pickup timing is incorrect. You will need to do a link and synch to get the motor to run well and not blow up. You may do a search on this site for a Clams Canino post on "Link and Synch of inlines". It may have enough info for you.

You can miss a little gasket, and really cause a lot of trouble. Look at the exploded parts diagram real close and be sure you aren't missing something.

been there, done that.

hope it helps
