carb rebuild questions

The carb on my boat needs to be rebuilt. The carb is a 2 barrel Mercarb.

What I can't verify is, do I need the kit with a 90 in the accelerator pump (new style) or the older style with a straight shaft?

My boat is a 1991 VIP Vision 1760. It has the 3.0L and alpha drive.

Thanks, Zach

OK, I just removed the carb and 9562-2 is stamped on the side.

Does that help anybody identify which rebuild kit I need?

Thank you, but I don't see any specifics on their site that can help me identify which kit I need.

I guess since nobody seems to know, I will just take it apart and see which accelerator pump it needs.

Is your carb a Mercruiser 2 barrel or a GM Rochester. I believe there is only one kit for the Mercruiser carb and a different kit for the Rochester.

It is a Mercarb. There are different versions available. One has a 90 degree bend in the accelerator pump and the other does not.

A mod can close this thread if they want.

I took it apart and figured it out.

Mine needs the accelerator pump with the 90 degree bend.

Re: carb rebuild questions

I need some help. Please.

I got the carb rebuilt and put back on the boat. I set the float according to the merccruiser service manual and set the idle and mixture screws per their recommendations.

Boat started up just fine, but will not idle. I have to bump the throttle up a bit. It seems very sensitive to throttle position. Just barely moving it up will cause it to run a pretty high RPM.

Any suggestions on where to start trying to figure this out?

Thanks

Re: carb rebuild questions

ok I am confused here. I got the car rebuilt or I rebuilt the carb? If you had it rebuilt, take it back to the re builder! If you rebuilt it I have a few questions. Did you use a knockoff carb kit? Did you soak it clean carb solution? was it blown out with compressed air? Was any old gasket material left on horn, throttle body, Vacuum leaks. And the finale question. Did you take any pictures of carb while disassembling?

I myself rebuilt the carb. I guess I didn't realize there was a knockoff rebuild kit. I ordered from a place I found linked on here. I think it was boatpartscheap. Yes, I soaked in it carb cleaner. Yes, I blew compressed air through it. No gasket material left, I made sure it was all cleaned off. I don't think I really have anywhere for vacuum leaks, other than where the gaskets are located. I did not put my hands on the carb while it was running, so I guess it is possible, but I doubt it. Yes, I took some pics while taking it apart.

Re: carb rebuild questions

There's more to rebuilding a "carb" than just putting a new accel pump in it. You are kind of vague in the posts. How did you clean the booster venturi? What cleaning solvent did you use. What was the part number on the box that you purchased?

Sorry, not trying to be vague, just giving the the answers as best I can. Honestly I'm not sure what the booster venturi is. I used berryman's carburetor and parts cleaner. Everywhere that I took a part out of, I blew compressed air through it, then also sprayed through it with a can of carb cleaner, then again with air. The only part of the box I have left has 19032C on the outside of the box. I can look in my email and find you a direct link to the kit I bought, if it would help.

Edit: Here is the kit. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Merc...2041100QQptZBoatQ5fPartsQ5fAccessoriesQ5fGear

Vipzach{ Were not trying to be harsh with you, were just trying to help with your problem at hand. The problem we have, is we don't know what the engine was doing Pryor to rebuilding it. We also don't know if the carb tag matches the kit you purchased? We don't know without being there and actually seeing and hearing what motor is or is not doing from this this side of cyber space. We also don't know your mechanical abilities? I can hear the frustration in your posts and understand it. So please try and understand that the questions we ask you are not to insult you in any way, it's so that we may help you in solving the issues that you are having.

Monte, I know you aren't being harsh and I understand cyber fixing can be a pain. Pryor to the rebuild, it was idling rough and fuel was leaking out of the venturis after I would turn off the motor. I figured that junk was inside the bowl and it needed rebuilt. There was junk in the bowl. I am fairly mechanically inclined, but have never rebuilt a carb. I am pretty sure that I bought the correct rebuild kit, but am now worried since the other guy mentioned it being a knockoff kit. Sorry though, I'm not really frustrated yet and don't mean to sound upset with your questions.

I appreciate any help from you guys with more knowledge than I!

LOL, I knew I should have scrolled up and double checked who wrote that.

Did I answer your questions or do you need info?

I am not sure that I fully understand. The venturi cluster was held in with 3 screws and had a gasket under it. IIRC, there were no other parts that I replaced in the cluster. There are two venturis that sprayed fuel into the carb. I believe it was leaking out of the bottom.

Re: carb rebuild questions

Any ideas guys?

Some more detail from just now starting it. If leave the throttle just past the neutral position, it will rev at about 2500 RPM. After about 30 seconds, it will start to die, like it is running out of gas. If I start it and immediately return it to the neutral position, it will die immediately.

I am wondering about the float level and if I screwed it up, but not sure that would cause the high rpm. dunno

Re: carb rebuild questions

OK, few more details. I removed the throttle linkage from the carb. Boat will start and stay running, but is idling at about 1300 rpm. Idle screw isn't even touching. Boat also runs pretty rough.

Also, should the throttle spring back after you give it some gas, without the linkage hooked up? Mine does not. If you give it a little gas and let go, it will stay there.
