My first carb job. Got the first carb off and apart. Is it necessary to remove the jets? Or just clean and blow them out?

I have the service manual for directions but is there anything I should pay extra attention to?

Clean and blow them out. Do not remove them as you may damage them. Here is a link to a video where a mechanic is rebuilding the carb's.

I think some people take them out and some don't.I'll be interested in the replies you get.I'm going to do mine in the next few weeks.
It will be my first carb job on a 2 stroke.I have done a bunch of rochester carbs before.

Thanks guys! I saw the video and that is why I decided I could do it myself. I opted for the Napa carb kit. I just wanted to be sure on the jets before I reassemble everything.

That is a good video to watch when doing a carb for your first time, I always post it myself. However, more often than not when the jets are not removed, the owner often wonders why the outboard still does not perform as it should. Those jets are often overlooked, yet should not be. The tool to remove them is easily made with a belt sander and screw driver, or Im told that a certain model works as is, maybe someone can jump in here and remind me which one that is, Husky maybe?? Here is an example of the tool needed. Compliments of FR.

At the very least, use machinists wire through them, you cannot clean them by simply soaking them in the carb cleaner.

I cleaned them carb cleaner and blew them out. I verified I could cleanly see through them all with a flash light. I did have one that appeared to be a little dirty after that so I used a small copper wire, then flushed it again.

Oh, I forgot to ask about the lead shot (not plugs) removal. Do you remove it or not? Is there another jet under it?

Use the carbureter diagram that comes with your OEM kits or the one on the BRP parts catalog site for your engine to locate the orifices [jets].

I would recommend that you not remove the air bleed jets for cleaning because of the risk of vibration causing them to fall out and then being pulled into the engine.

I'm pretty much done with the rebuild but there was a reference to prying the lead balls out in the service manual. I didn't see the need or know what it would expose to take them out.

no, not the lead shot, they're just there to plug up holes left during the manufacturing process........but do remove the core plugs - flat discs, the replacements are concave until you flatten 'em out...I think that step is in the MD's video........

btw, you can verify the operation of your float valves by blowing through the fuel intake...carb upside down, no air should pass...right side up, should be very little backpressure. the bowl should be dry for this - you don't want to inhale any carb cleaner (don't ask me how I know) ;)
