Re: Carb rebuilding question '76 Merc 1500

Oh yeah, btw, I'm also having a problem of the motor kicking up when in reverse. I figured it would have a reverse lock but I can't find one for the life of me. It has power tilt and trim but it still kicks up in reverse. Am I over looking a reverse lock?

Eric,
On the front of the float bowl there is a number printed. That's your carb type. Might take a little wiping with a rag to see it. As long as the number matches one of the numbers provided in reference to your parts kit you should be good.
The float is a separate item that doesn't come with any kit I've seen. The good thing is yours are probably fine. I'm pretty sure they are solid like mine in a '79 115. As long as the spring on top extends out at least 3/32" it should be good to go.

BTW, you'll need 1 kit per carb

As for the trim/reverse lock I'm not sure. I have a hydrolic trim also but mine doesn't pop up. You may have some air in the system.

Hope this helps, John

There is no reverse lock on motors that came from the factory with power trim. I installed power trim on my 1979 115hp and the instructions said to disable the reverse lock. Is your power trim working correctly? The motor can not jump up in reverse if the trim cyclnders are full of fluid. You can't compress a liquid.

Eric, on the bottom of the PTT pump/resevoir there should be a knurled knob. This is the manual release. I think you will find it turned all the way CW. Turn it the opposite way and see if the motor will now stay down in reverse.

That looks like the rebuild kit for the carbs. You will need three kits. I recommend you buy the floats as well. The originals will disolve in the ethanol gasoline we now use. The new floats will be hard plastic, versus the original foam ones.
