rebuilding the carb in my 15hp 4stroke merc. The diaphragm has some dried varnish on it and doesnt look as shapely as it probably should.. Replace? or just wash off and reuse? Also, should i soak the top part of the carb assembly along with the float bowl and jets? The reason i'm asking, is because of the moving parts that are still attached and oiled, such as the choke/spring, throttle/spring and related butterfly valves. The service manual doesnt say anything about needing to remove these parts but it doesnt specify if i should soak or just spray...

Re: Carb Rebuilding

diaphragms are costly...... clean and reuse if there are no holes.

Depending on the shape of the carb I would try my best to remove and clean all the jets.

I use a can of carb cleaner and a can of canned air before I resort to soaking and the air compressor.

Most parts need to be clean and dry...... do not over oil anything just a drop ot two will work

Re: Carb Rebuilding

I'm a big fan of soaking in carb cleaner, then spray down with canned carb cleaner and an air compressor.

If really bad I will spray with carb cleaner, and clean out jets and any small spaces using a set of welding tip cleaners, spray once more then let it soak in the carb cleaner over night, or atleast a few hours if I'm in a hurry...

Usually after an hour or two of soaking, I will shake the tray and get any other bubbles out from areas that may of been opened

Just have to make sure you take off anything that is not metal or you loose it.

Note that most of the carbs I clean lately are ones that have been sitting for years.

If just a basic service for something I have gone through before I will just use the tip cleaners and spray some carb cleaner through it...

Although the dipping carb cleaner is great for times when I don't want to mess with adjustments like fuel/air, the stuff really gets down in there. :)
