It appears that trying to remove carb on Johnson 9.9 Rope start...one must first remove the recoil starter housing.....has anyone done this and can give me steps to take & advice on how to do it without it all unwinding in big mess, etc. ?

The whole pull starter should just be on one bolt that runs down the center and mounts on the lower housing. I think its a 1/2 or a 5/8ths bolt. Loosen the bolt and then with one hand hold the starter assmebly and then turn out the bolt. Once everything is removed take some electrical tape and wrap up the entire unit to keep the inner spring from jumping out of the cup. I would just leave the bolt in it and tape it all really good so it doesn't come apart. Then you should have easy access to the carb mounting bolts. I have done this multiple times on a 9.9 and a 15Hp engines ranging from 1983 to 1995. All seemed to have the same set up.

I stand corrected, Looks like yours is a different set up than the one I am familiar with. Racerone is right, on yours its just three screws to remove it.

I guess they are not all the same.----Maybe the original poster does not have a 94 model.----Many motors are mis-represented as to the year when offered for sale.-----Model # should be a requirement when posting questions as it will save every body time.

leeroys ramblings is a great resource for the 9.9/15's. i recommend the op take some time to read the applicable section and bookmark for future use. ( its also a great resource for other hp motors!)
