Carb spitting gas

On my way out from deer camp, my 1974 20HP Merc stalled and wouldn't start. I pulled the cover off and noticed that the carb was spitting gas out as the engine turned over. Could this be something simple like the needle valve stuck in the closed position? Thanks

Re: Carb spitting gas

Forgot to mention on my original question, one of the guys in the group was going to try spraying Quick Start(ether) in the carb to get the motor started. I thought I heard somewhere that the intense heat this stuff burns at can destroy the reed valves. True or False? Inquiring minds want to know. Thanks again.

Re: Carb spitting gas

#1) probably a stuck float in fill bowl.
#2)you don't want to run the engine without oil
in the cylinders.
sounds more like it's getting too much gas anyways.
sometimes if you tap on the side of the bowl
with the but end of a screwdriver, it will unstick.
sounds like you have a carb rebuild in your future
though.
good luck,
M.Y.
