Carb/Timing settings issues (Pro 50 Yammy)

Anybody familiar with ’92 Yamaha Pro 50 Carburetor/Timing settings? Here’s my issue.

When you push forward on the throttle, it advances the timing for a bit before it begins to open up the carburetors. In advancing the timing, it pushes against the CDI (?), which moves a little needle along a upward curve, until it can’t go forward anymore because the throttle on the remote is all the way forward.

On the CDI box, there are two dashes/lines that mark in the area of where the timing indicator pointer would be when the throttle is in neutral, and there is a dash further up the curve where the pointer would be when the throttle is fully advanced (ideally, WOT).

The problem is that I cannot get the lync and sync correct so that the indicator is on the top dash on the CDI box while the flaps on the carbs are completely open, and at the same time have the indicator hit the bottom dash on the CDI box when the throttle is in the neutral position. Is this a problem with the remote or the cables? I’ve tried every conceivable combination of lync and sync techniques, gone through the manual, but it doesn’t seem to be within the laws of physics to allow for both to happen with the equipment present on my motor.

So, my questions is do both of these have to be present, or should I be concerned about the timing to be fully advanced when the carb plates are fully open, or should it be at the bottom indicator when the throttle is in neutral? The boat runs good either way, I just don’t want to permanently damage anything. I’ve had it for a few years now (the motor), and it starts and accelerates good either way. I would just like to have the extra power of having true WOT, but would also like to be able to troll it down to the correct RPM’s, if that’s possible as well.

Thanks for the input!

Re: Carb/Timing settings issues (Pro 50 Yammy)

hello
yes on the 3 cyl I am working on the throttle stop arrests the motion of the magneto lever and stops the movement of the wire link that moves the ign timing on the CDI. the spring loaded portion continues to push a cam that opens the throotles. what manual do you have? maybe I can look at one of mine and tell you what page to look on.
good luck and keep posting
