Just humor me fellas, what does it take to take a 2 barrel carbureated 4.3 to fuel injected? Just curious as to how much the most "affordable" options cost. I have looked into going with vortec heads and a 4 barrel. While I'm exploring all the options I'd also like to look into going efi instead.

I think it would depend on what type of EFI. If its multiport (each cylnder has an injector) then you are talking new heads and what not. If its just a conversion kit where you replace the carb with an EFI throttle body that has two injectors in it then you are looking at less.

Huh,..??..?? guess you've never looked closely at an Mpi intake manifold,....

Ayuh,.... Add another $2,000.00 to the cost of the heads, 'n you'll 'bout be there,...

Haha okay geez. I'd read mention in a thread or two of some cheap options for fuel injection. Sounds better to live with a carb and learn to adjust it or buy an injected motor some day.

For heads, head to the salvage yard and pull vortec heads off a 1996 or later 4.3.

For converting to fuel injection, buy a fuel injection motor from spark arrestor to at least the transom plate with all the wiring and ECM. Or save your money and simply stick with a carb and put that money into something nice, like a new stereo.

Already have a nice stereo! :watermelon: I found a few sources for vortec heads that had been machined and refurbished pretty reasonable when I was researching taking it to vortec heads/4bbl.
I found a volley throttle body fuel injection kit that seemed promising, but for all I know it would be crap. Less temperamental idling and starting would be nice.

Its not that bad to run carbs actually very close to the same..you wont gain any economy nor power the short story is we cant run os sensors as of yet they dont work out in a wet exhaust system. If you have a deep inventory with FI you can peice it together for about 1500 but that's a lot of work for turn key starting

I do know if you know what you're doing a good carb can be set up to perform as good or better than efi, I just don't know what I'm doing. I can turn the adjustment screws willy nilly and hope to get lucky. I've adjusted my timing, fuel/air, and idle speed and its not right yet. I know my timing is a little high because it starts hard when warm since fiddling with it. Idle 'surges' a little bit, and when warm it idles too high.slow it down and it won't stay running.

I do think I'm still a little rich. Lets out a puff of black smoke upon cranking and I smell fuel. A friend of mine has a 3.0 carbed that has other issues, and his was rebuilt.

On the other hand, my dads 89 302 in his bayliner is carbed and runs perfect, and my old f250 with a 460 has never had carb problems in the 20 years its been in the family. It just seems like once one isn't right I don't have the know how to get it that way.
