What is the purpose of the hose running from the MercCarb to the fuel pump?

the hose you referr to is called a "tell-tale" it runs from the fuel pump TO the carb to indicate a ruptured fuel pump diaphram. If this was a car pump and it was leaking fuel you would be most likely dead by now.

Ayuh,.... If yer talkin' 'bout the yellowish tygon see-through line,..??

It's to route the spilled gas from a ruptured fuel pump diaphragm, into the carb to cause floodin', to tell ya the fuel pump needs to be replaced,....

Doin' so, it keeps the spilt gas Outa the bilge,... Less chance of a Big Boom,...
