carb trouble? 84 johnson 6 hp

so here it is.my moter is a 84 johnson 6hp i took it out and it runs ok.but when i give it full throttle it seems to be running half power.its missing the air silencer on the front of the carb.maybe the problum? when i was running at the lake i took off the moter cover and put my thumb half way over the little hole next to the big choke hole and it and it sped up by at least 40% any anwsers?and where can u buy the air slincer

your air silencer is a dealer item or ebay, tcoutboards.com

sounds like you need through carbs cleaning, and rebuild kit. high speed jet clogging, #24 in diagram.

You'll need parts #25 to #31 on THIS DIAGRAM but the two main parts,#28 and #29 will have to be located at dealers who have them in stock or obtained second hand.

I think you will also have to clean your carb as I don't think the missing air silencer alone will cause the trouble you describe.
