Hello, first to introduce myself I am a retired Marine Master Gunnery Sergeant/Sergeant Major with 24 years. I am not a boat mechanic by any means, but fairly mechanically minded. My boat is a 1987 Alumacraft 16' bass boat with a 1992 Mercury 40 hp motor serial # OD120859 4 cyl 2 stroke.

I finally got the compression checked (yes I'm that guy) after buying a new tester my compression was 75 psi on all 4 cyls. Perhaps someone can tell me if that's acceptable it seems low, but i don't know. I have replaced all fuel lines, bulb, filter, and today rebuilt the fuel pump.

I was pressure checking my fuel system and discovered that the top carb bowel was leaking I tightened the nut, but no avail, I removed the bowl to replace the gasket. NOW THE PROBLEM after removing the fuel bowl and the gasket the baffel fell out and was lost. I have checked a couple of sources and this baffel is no longer available. ???? Will my motor run/idle alright without this baffel over the float or do I need to continue to locate one?? Please any information/help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance and SEMPER FI.

Re: Carb ???

Sarg the compression is low, minimum spec.is 80 psi.The motor will run without the baffle, make sure the carb bowl is not distorted where it's bolted through you can straighten it with a round flat punch.Do not use aftermarket parts as I believe some of the gaskets are thinner and they do leak!Had the same problem last year and learned the hard way GL,Ted

Re: Carb ???

Thanks for the reply I found the baffel and got the carb back together with no leaks. I will get her to the water this week to see if she starts better. I found a split fuel line on the enrichment valve and preset the adjustments on the carbs. Once again thanks for the infomation.
