Put a little grease in the grove and push the oring into it, that should hold it in place so you can install the carb.

I'm having trouble keeping my seal in place during reinstallation as well. Can I use any kind of grease? This won't hurt anything if it gets injested through the carb?

The grease would not normally be sucked into the carb, due to it's density. If it gets cut by gas or if a bit does get sucked in, the fuel passing around it will cut it down and it will get burned up w/o issue. of course, if a clump gets sucked in it, could clog up something. Use it sparingly.
