I was cleaning my spark plugs earlier on my 140 merc and noticed heavy carbon buildup on the end of the plugs. I was wondering why i only drove for about 45 min. It seemed like i had a lack of power and im getting some hesitation when im coming up on plane. What do you think could be causing this? i turned the mixture screw leaner the last time i was out but this time the same thing.

I had the carb rebuilt last season. Do you think it is due already? If i do it myself is it necessary to soak it over night in kerosene or just use the rebuild kit contents and clean everything with carb cleaner and put it back together. Reason im asking is because a friend told me if i paid the marina to do it thet put it in a solution and boil it to make sure all the little ports get cleaned out. The downsize is it cost 200 bucks and the last time i got it done it ended up being the fuel pump witc cost another 150. So ill see if i can save some money. Thank you for your time. MIKE

Re: Carbon build up

Can you take some pictures of the build up. it could be anything at this point, from simple carbon, to part of the piston. Nice clear pictures would be awsome.
