Carbon fiber floor replacesment

I had a crazy thought of replacing my bluefin floor with carbon fiber material instead of marine grade plywood. My first thought is why they don't use this already and my second thought is to ask you folks on your experience with this material and would it work for flooring which will hold a couple of bass chairs.

One word..... COST!

Go ahead and use epoxy and carbon fiber but I hope you are backed by huge funds. It would be a needless novelty and will not improve your fishing ability!

Sure it would work- But you'd have a $100,000.00 bass boat! Any reason other than pure novelty that you're entertaining this idea??

To be fair, you can do it and it won't cost tens of thousands.

For a 17 foot bass boat I'd expect a cost around $500 for the cloth (assuming about 100 sq. feet of floor space, and three layers of cloth in the floor) and about $150-200 in epoxy, plus about $400 in honeycomb core sheets, or $130 if you use good quality plywood as a core.

I'm assuming you'll do all the work yourself, creating a cored carbon fiber deck about a half inch thick. Note that you'll need to reinforce the deck for stiffness because the carbon is stronger than glass but the thinness of the deck will make it more flexible.

So, total cost of materials is around $1300, not counting tools, protective gear, etc which you would have to have for any boat rebuild. This is also assuming you don't make mistakes getting the carbon cut, laid or wetted out.

The only advantage to the carbon for a deck over wood or fiberglass is weight. A deck built using carbon fiber and honeycomb core would weigh about two thirds of what a standard plywood/fiberglass deck would weigh.

The cost of materials for a high quality plywood deck covered in biaxial fabric would be about $80 for fiberglass, $100 for epoxy, $130 for plywood, for $320 total plus labor.

So, the question is... is that extra $1000 out of your pocket worth it to save one third the weight of your deck? For most of us, the answer is no :)

It'd also last for centuries and look very cool, strong, and practically no maintenance. I would be interested in seeing it done. But it's your money you're gambling with... what's an extra thousand or so? :p

Thanks for the information. Some folks at work are testing this material with different applications and I thought I would ask to see if it would work. Cost is prohibiting so I think I will replace the floor with the standard material. Thanks again for the information.

ErikGreen thanks... for the solid reply to WT2

Your estimate sounds pretty solid to me....

not sure if there would be any appreciable weight loss due to the carbon fiber unless he squeegeed the heck out of it to remove excess resin. Its just alot stronger than the regular fiberglass cloth, either way if you want the "cool" look just do the last layer in a solid sheet of carbon fiber cloth $35 a yard all day long online
