CDC test Boaters for Carbon Monoxide poisoning. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution has an article in Sunday 8/10 issue regarding Boating and Carbon Monoxide go to: http://www.ajc.com/metro/content/metro/0803/10cdcboat.html to read complete article. Backdraft of slow moving boats and idling boats can cause CO to build up at the swim platform as well as in the cabin-cockpit. I didn’t realize that the levels could reach the dangerous point in the “open air”.
Mike

Hi Mike, I just finished reading that artical too, how about that part about "teak surfing" man, you talk about crazy. I can't imagine hanging off the back of the swim platform with your nose stuck up the tailpipe while going 20 mph or more..............you gotta be nuts.......

I particularly liked the lawsuit against the boat manufaturers because someones dumb-*** kid dies teak surfing because the owners manual shows a picture of someone holding on to the swim platform. The picture was meant to show the safety of having an inboard with the prop up under the boat verses the danger of a stendrive where the prop is right there at the swim platform, and these idiots took that picture to mean that you can be towed by holding on to the swim platform. Needless to say the boat manufacturers won, thank GOD. Natural selection is not doing a good enough job of weeding out the morons....

As someone who is temporally without a boat, (I’m searching for the right boat at a steal of a price :D ) I haven’t been on the water recently but two things struck me as “out in left field”! First who in their right mind even after having some adult beverage would drop off of a swim platform of a moving boat? Can you say chum?
The second thing is the reason the CDC is involved is that someone’s 2-year old passed out from CO while on the swim platform :( . I have 3-granddaughters, 3-6 & 7 years, I don’t think they will be on the swim platform with the engine(s) running. What ever happened to common sense?
Mike

The world is full of stupid people... I'm glad they exist for contrast :)
This is actually a good point though.
We use gas analyzers at work for confined space entries (CSE) so I took one out to my 22 1/2 SeaRay and did a little test. I don't recall how many ppm of carbon monoxide was present but it was enough to trigger the 8 hour exposure alarm. I found that by leaving certain windows open and not others really helped but never elimainated the problem. The only cure was to speed up or take the back canvas off.
