Carbon Monoxide Warning Sticker

I notice that here in Washington State that any boat powered by a gas motor must have a carbon monoxide warning sticker to inform passengers of the dangers of carbon monoxide. This even includes outboard motors. I guess that the operator is exempt from carbon monoxide.

I must get one of these stickers when I license my boat if not sooner.

Unless you plan on operating the boat via remote control, you are a passenger. :D

Stopped at the DOL and picked up a carbon monoxide sticker. Got to keep the bureaucrats happy.

Seems the state is content in me keeping the 8 digit HIN they previously assigned. The boat is too old for them to bother.

Just bought a brand new boat this year and of course it came with the warning sticker.

I hate stickers....

That was the first one to be removed. The second one was the one on the transom next to the boarding ladder that said not to use the ladder if the motor was running.....geez...

The carbon monoxide sticker is a new requirement this year in Minnesota, the only difference is that it applies basically to cutty cabin type boats, , boats with a permanent closed bow where someone can sit/lay down.

What brought that on was a few years back there were some folks out on there boat, the boat was "longer" cutty cabin with an inboard, , not an IO but a true inboard. The young daughter wasn't feeling well so she went into the cabin to lay down. She never got up, the cabin was full of carbon monoxide which was ultimately attributed to a small leak in the exhaust system.
The interesting thing is that as the story unfolded all or most of the people on the boat were not feeling well as the day went on. Headaches, etc., they just attributed it to being in the sun, etc. The other interesting thing is that one or both of the parents were doctors, but no one in there wildest dreams thought it was carbon monoxide as everyone except the daughter was out in the open, , in the fresh air.

Washington state requires the sticker on all boats with a motor other than a jet ski. It seems excessive to me for an outboard but I now have one of those stickers on my boat. There's a potential fine for not displaying the sticker that can be picked up free at a DOL office.

How a sticker can prevent CO poisoning is beyond me, awareness is better than nothing I suppose. Wouldn't it be more prudent to require a 50 buck CO detector on boats with confined spaces? It may just save someone's life one day.

Tyee Man, you got lucky. I worked with CO constantly surrounding us in our operation, volumes of up to 250,000 cubic feet a minute at 20 PSI, it can be the silent killer, and it has killed and still kills.
