Carbs for a 140 x-flow

My motor is running with original '79 1-3/8" carbs. These are the more primitive units that have only idle and high speed jets. Midrange fuelling is simply controlled by the HS jets and the emulsion tubes at various throttle positions. My throttle shafts are quite worn - can move them about 1/16" fore/aft, which made linc/sync a PITA but I did get it to run smooth for slow or quick transitions out of the hole.

I have a bead on a pair of 1-3/8" carbs from a 1984 140. These carbs have the midrange jets and the high-pickup idle system with the thin tubes through the venturi nozzles. They're not the latest ones with the flat plate on top.

Would I be able to run the '84 carbs as "Plug-n-play" or would any jet changes be required? I ask since the '79 carbs were used along with the high compression heads, and the '84 probably had low compression bathtub heads.

OMC changed the carb design to improve what, fuel efficiency? Midrange smoothness? Power? Transition ease?

Any thoughts appreciated. Buddy only wants $50 for the pair.

You may need to do some more homework. The problem is that the 84 140 carbs did have the flat plate on the top. Looks like the flat plate came out later in the 83 model year. So, I'm just not sure what year carbs you are looking at without the flat plate.... Before you make the purchase, I'd compare the main jets from the newer carbs with the ones from your 79. In any event $50 sounds like deal to me. You can experiment with changing jet sizes once you get it running.

All I have to go on at this point is what he said for vintage. He is selling a combination of 115 and 140 parts, and when asked specifically about them being 1-3/8" he said they were. These are the pictures provided, but it kinda looks like they're 1-5/16" carbs which won't work... Still, I'm going to look as it appears he has a 17" SST on the parts list too.

These could be out of a 1980 V4. I don't see the idle air bleed jet between the two barrels. Which would make this a 2-jet carb, like your current ones.

From these poor pictures, they look like the carbs off my '82 90hp also. The bleeds on those are at the top front, just before the venturi starts, so you wouldn't be able to see them from this angle. Useless to me unless 1-3/8" though.

Have him send picture of front of carburetors. The throat size is molded in there on the lower right. Can't read it with how the picture is angled.

Indeed. I have asked more than once for confirmation of the size, and for updated pictures. Frankly, I think he's a flake and I'm whistling up my own a$$. Time will tell.
