My motor is running with original '79 1-3/8" carbs. These are the more primitive units that have only idle and high speed jets. Midrange fuelling is simply controlled by the HS jets and the emulsion tubes at various throttle positions. My throttle shafts are quite worn - can move them about 1/16" fore/aft, which made linc/sync a PITA but I did get it to run smooth for slow or quick transitions out of the hole.
I have a bead on a pair of 1-3/8" carbs from a 1984 140. These carbs have the midrange jets and the high-pickup idle system with the thin tubes through the venturi nozzles. They're not the latest ones with the flat plate on top.
Would I be able to run the '84 carbs as "Plug-n-play" or would any jet changes be required? I ask since the '79 carbs were used along with the high compression heads, and the '84 probably had low compression bathtub heads.
OMC changed the carb design to improve what, fuel efficiency? Midrange smoothness? Power? Transition ease?
Any thoughts appreciated. Buddy only wants $50 for the pair.
