Carbs leaking fuel at full tilt?

Hello, I own a 1980 Chrysler 115HP outboard. I noticed that when the motor is put at full tilt (just as if you were transporting) it leaks fuel, not much but its noticeable. Seems like it leaking from the carbs, then hitting the inside of the hood and flowing down to the bottom of the engine compartment.

Is this normal?

Thanks,

Look at the engine with the hood off. You will see that at full tilt, the back of the carb bowls are higher than the venturi pitot tube. So, at full tilt fuel will run out the pitot tube inside the carb and dribble out the front of the carb, then out the engine. Even though the carbs are vented to prevent warm boil-over, after shutting down a warmed up engine and tilting, it will happen. It only amounts to an ounce or so but unfortunately, this is the nature of the beast. Seems to be less prevalent with a cold engine like priming carbs at start-up.

If it really bothers you, disconnect the fuel line at the dock and let the engine run a bit out of the carbs before tilting the engine or, tilt the engine until the prop is almost out of the water while running in to the dock.

It doesn't happen to my engine because at my dock the water is shallow and I run in with the engine tilted.

Re: Carbs leaking fuel at full tilt?

Okay me too , asked the same question and so I popped off the cowling and found the leak.. it is located on the carburetor and it appears to be an open port drain for overflow? Think it is just the way it was designed because, if the shut off fuel valve is closed , it stops.. open the fuel shut off and it pisses out ths stem port on the lower side on the carburetor. Not sure if this is a late design flaw or maybe the idle screws need to be reset but at least I know where it leaks. Is this normal overflow leakage or trouble service issue? The engine starts no problem and idles nice.. I do however notice a bit of ash residue and the water stays milk cloudy too after a good 15 minute flush in a 5 gal. bucket. My 2hp yahama burns much cleaner and water in bucket appears crystal clear after same flush time. Just not sure if I'll be waisting more money trying new replacement parts for the 3.5 mercury. I'm thinking now maybe the older models just run dirtier and perhaps why Mercury discontinued many of the parts for this 1983 model So I too will accept it as normal flaw design, try remembering to use shut off valve and burning off remainder carb fuel dry before tilt
Glad to hear its normal, and not something wrong with my carbs. Thanks a bunch Frank!
