Ahoy, Saperry. No, there is no way to do a decent job of cleaning without taking them apart. Use you manual and resynching is a snap.

Red sky at night. . .
JB :)

Re: Carbs on OMC Crossflow V6

Just got back from yhe lake............
I did not have to paddle any.....good
I never left sight of the ramp...not so good
Here is what I did....

1.Cleaned carbs as best I could W/O removing.
(I saw your post when I got back JB)
2.Drained gas tank Added two bottles OMC oil.
and 10 gal 89 Oct. Gas
3. Launched boat
4. Started fine and seemed to run OK Tied to
Pier. After it warmed up for a few I tried
to go out in the lake. The motor seemed
to do fine untill about 1/3-1/2 throttle
Then it seemed to just fall on its face.
It idles fine run it up on fast idle to
2500 to 3000 rpm no problem. Put it in
gear and 1500 to 2000 rmp is max. Try to
open it up more and it falls off and
almost stalls.
5. went back to pier and added can OMC engine
tune while on fast IDLE at 1800 rmp or so.
6. Let it sit for about 1 1/2 hr. Started
fine, let run on fast idle for 15 min
Idled better, ran the same on the
lake. I have not ran a compression check
since I got back before it was 102 102 106
103 97 100 (1-6).
7. The starboard side head was hot to the
touch after running. (you could leave you
finger on it but it was hot). The port
side head was only warm to the touch.
I am going to pull the carbs and clean them later today. (unless that is a bad Idea). I do not think it is a carb problem. At least not the only problem. The VRO sys was recently disconnected. (Before i got the Boat). This is the first time at the lake since.(I am told).
Could there be something in the VRO sys not letting it take fuel? Limp mode or something? Why is one head so much hotter than the other? What should I do now?

:( :( :( :(

Re: Carbs on OMC Crossflow V6

Ahoy, Saperry. From your description, I don't think you have a carb problem, but I do think you have a fuel supply problem OR a S.L.O.W. problem.

Fuel supply could be restriction of fuel flow, or air flow to the tank, any where before the carbs. If the VRO was disconnected, that could be a clue that it was done improperly and interfered with fuel pump operation. If you can get the engine to "open up" by pumping your primer bulb you have a fuel flow problem.

Check: Vent for tank is not restricted, fuel pickup in tank is not restricted, primer moves fuel only one way and doesn't "back leak", oil inlet to VRO fuel pump is plugged, no air leaks in fuel lines, fuel pump squirts fuel into a plastic bottle, Sensors in oil tank are disconnected (what you have depends on what year engine).

If all of that checks out, you might be going into S.L.O.W. because of a temperature problem. Remove and test the T-stat from the starboard bank, per your manual.

Still no clear cause? Post us what you know.

Red sky at night. . .
JB :)

JB
thanks for the reply :)
I am going to Leave the carbs alone for now and check out the other problems you mentioned. I was alone at the lake so I could not pump the primer bulb during operation. It tried to "open up" some what if I held the electric choke.
The motor is 1986 model(according to title the plate is missing). Cover says VRO GT150
V6.

Yo! Sorry I missed your last post for so long.

Your experience with the choke verifies fuel starvation as your problem, but not carb(s).

Start at your tank vent and look for restriction, then the tank pickup, hoses, primer bulb, filter/water seperator, more hose.

Pull one of the output hoses from the fuel pump, stick it in a clear plastic bottle and turn her over. You should get strong spurts of fuel into the bottle and the fuel should be clear and free of water.

Somewhere in all that you should run into a restriction or air leak, or a weak fuel pump. The pump is a snap to remove, overhaul and reinstall.

Good luck.

Red sky at night. . .
JB :)
