hi,

1990 60 hp johnson..... ran it for a bit without the cover off the air silencer and noticed that the carbs were slightly misting or gently spitting .. Now someone told me that this is common as the fuel expelled this way is gathered at the bottom of the silencer and drained back into the crankcase and exited from the motor there.

Is this right or should the carbs need to be looked at and reset as they shoudln't be doing this???

My 1992 60 hp johnson spits fuel from the top carb only. I understand this is normal. That engine is plumbed so that a small amount of fuel/oil is circulated into the top crank bearing-for lubrication. For some reason, the circulated fuel/lube tends to exit from a port in the block right at the mating surface of the top carb. (it's not the carb) The result is an occasional spit of fuel that appears to come from the carb. It's a really small amount of fuel. I doubt it is enough to even accumulate at the bottom of the airbox and then get recirculated into the bottom cylinder.

if it's not your carb doing the spitting how is the fuel come back out through it,,, is it being expelled through the reeds when they are opening or something??

it's not a big issue with me ( yet) but over here the fuel isn't that cheap and it ain't gonna be for a looong time, and I hate wasting good fuel:D
You guys on the other side of the ocean may a times complain about your fuel prices but man ! everytime i'm there, I'm just amazed at how low it is.... it makes me wanna cry at times:facepalm:

If you have fuel spitting from more than just that top carb, you could have an issue with the reeds of the engine. Perhaps one of them has a chunk missing. If so, you will get some blowback from each carb with each rotation of the crank. You may want to pull the carbs off and peer into the throats of the reeds and see if you can see any problem.
