I have a 1979 Evinrude 25 h.p. when running from half throttle to full throttle, the adjustment rod will just almost spin clockwise until it starves the engine to a complete stop. I have taken the engine to our local dealer and he states the adjustment rod is fine when he puts it in his test tank. He admits the rod turns very easily. It has hardly any resistance. I have owned the engine since it was almost new. The dealer says the compression and everything is perfect. I am tired of taking it to our local dealer. I can remove the engine cowling, turn the adjustmemt knob to the left, crank the engine and it will run fine as long as, I hold the knob, or it will run approximately 1/3 throttle with the coke pulled on full. Not too much fun on a cold dark morning going duck hunting!! I will greatly appreciate any help in solving this problem. Tomorrow is the last day of ducking hunting and I need the motor to operate correctly to pick up all my decoys. Thanks in advance for your help!

Re: Carbuetor Adjustment Rod

Paul..... The description of a "Adjustment Rod" puzzles me somewhat, but I believe that you may be speaking of the top slow speed needle valve. If so, I would think that you are saying that the slow speed needle valve is viberating closed in a clockwise direction, which would lean the fuel mixture.

In which case, the problem would be that the nylon retainer that is located at the top front section of the carburetor (the one the needle valve screws through) is either worn out or is the old (loose) type.

To replace that retainer, gently turn the needle valve in to count the turns so that you can re-install it to that initial setting, then remove that needle valve. Pry the old retainer out, then install a new one.

The retainer should be "red" in color and the OMC part number is 315232. This retainer will be a tight fit around the needle valve and it will never turn (viberate) on its own again. Good luck.

Joe, your quick reply is appreciated very, very, much. Thank you! I am in Columbia, MO and we only have a Mercury dealer. He is the dealer to whom I took the motor. You are exactly correct! I didn't know what the valve was called. Raymond's Boat and Motor at the Lake of the Ozarks, 60 mile south, agreed with you and my son is on the way to get it. Many thanks again! Clanton, your generosity is greatly appreciated for offering to mail me the retainer. I was able to find the retainer at a dealer nearby. My son installed it last night up at our duck hunting lake and he said the motor runs like a new one. Thank you for your offer. Merry Christmas!
