Carburator issues

Ok so my motor is running great and it seams like it does not matter that it leaks fuel mixture from the carburetor air intake and from the two tiny holes on the lower unit and consumes a lot of fuel.
I tried adjusting the float in the carburetor and the only thing left is to adjust the rich/lean knob since I did not mess with any of the jets. I have been running the engine rich to save it but now I do not know when to stop since I want to run it leaner and try to solve the problem with fuel mixture coming out of everywhere.
My question is HOW DO I KNOW WHEN I AM RUNING TOO LEAN what are the symptoms before I blow up the motor.
Thanks, Costy:

When the engine starts to cough it is to lean. Check your needle end tip for groves.

Re: Carburator issues

1983 4.5 Hp Seahorse J5RHCTA I called the dealership to let them know that after doing the carb rebuilt I am still having the same problem and they told me that I might have a brocken "reed" i have no idea what that is. last weekend I forgot to rase the center board and I got stuck, this little motor fought @ full throttle for about 20 min to loosen me up and it performed beautifully. The compression I have is 86 in one cylinder and 89 in the other I do not think there is anything broken inside of the motor.
If I can only get it to stop dripping fuel after shut dow it would be great.
Thanks, Costy

the needle may not be seating fully in the seat if you want to clean or replace them

I inverted the carburetor blew in it and there was no air going throughI know that the needle seats perfectly and it was new part of the complete rebuilt kit and new float.

Did you get the float level set correctly?

Yes I got it leveled off slightly higher on opposite side of the hinge just like I read on this site and it works perfect as far as plenty of gas going through and complete shut when inverted.

Re: Carburator issues

if you have the integral fuel tank only, could you install a shut off valve in the line to the carb, then run the motor until it runs out of fuel, or just unplug the fuel line from the remote tank and run it out of fuel?

I do not have an internal tank and I always disconect the fuel line and let the motor run dry, right after the motor stops here comes a few drops of fuel and after 10 minutes the crud mixed with unburned fuel comes out of the two pin holes at the botom of the lower unit.

Re: Carburator issues

k..it won't stop it completely, but a decarb procedcure should cut down on that drainage issue..look under the Sticky: Top Secret Files for a how to on the decarb procedure

Re: Carburator issues

Had a mechanic look at my motor and definitely running too rich, I went towards the lean side and I am having less issues with the poodle on the garage floor though I am still getting some fuel from the carb. Air intake but according to him it is normal.
I do have one further question, my fuel filter/screen has 5 screws 4 on each corner and one in the middle, the one in the middle seams like it could be an adjustment of some sort but I am not sure. Anyone have any idea what kind of adjustment might be?
I have decided to get a repair/maintenance manual the mechanic that looked at the engine told me that it has a lot of life left in it.

Thanks, Costy
