My friend's 1961 Evinrude 18hp Fastwin won't start. Checked the usual stuff spark, fuel, compression. Everything good. Plug was fouled but he's getting hellacious good spark and carb settings were normal. Motor ran great last time out. Just won't start now. Cleaned the plug and tried a new one and it fouled both of them. Several times. Finally pulled the carb off for cleaning and it was squeeky clean. Fuel is fresh and correct mix. With the carb off my buddy turned the motor over and it was blowing air OUT the orofice not pulling air in. Also a small amount of dark residue spitting back through orifice. Just a little spray on your hand from maybe 10-15 revolutions. I've heard of motorcycle engines doing something similar when the crankcase was overfilled but of course this has no crankcase. Well not like a bike's anyway. Any ideas what could be going on with this "rude"?
Thanks everyone.
JC

Usually means a cracked or damaged reed. Take a bright flashlight and look in the hole with the carb off. If there is a damaged reed, you should be able to see it. Also look for any that have a large gap in between the reed and reed plate.

Thanks I was hoping it might be something else. I'll check that out.
