carburetor cleaning

have carb apart except for jets takes a special tool do these have to be removed before soaking carb to do a good job have everything else removed

They should be removed. You can make the tool by grinding down a screwdriver to fit.

If that is the 1975 engine, I would recommend that you soak the carburetors first before removng the jets. After 30+ years, the jets will probably be stuck very well. If it were my carbs, I would blow the jets out with 120 PSI air, test them for size and leave them alone.

The jets come out fairly easy unless they are heavilly gummed in there. The secret to the tool is the parallel sides to the blade. A tapered blade as on a regular screwdriver will tend to spread the soft brass jet and make it tighter than ever in the hole.

You can make your own tool from a screwdriver with a 3/16" round shank screwdriver (think phillips). Cut off the business end and grind/file as shown.

If you decide not to pull them out, then follow Joe Reeve's suggestion to run a steel wire through all of them because air itself won't loosen gum deposits.

thanks for the replys watched vido good one think ill soak them then try to remove jets dont think they have ever been rebuilt
