IN GENERAL,WHEN THE MOTOR IS IDLEING,SHOULD THE THROTTLE BUTTERFLIES BE CLOSED AND ALL THE AIR INTAKE BE THROUGH THE IDLE JETS? I HAVE AN 87' 125HP FORCE, AND IT SEEMS LIKE IT WONT IDLE REAL WELL UNLESS AT LEAST ONE OF THE BUTTERFLIES IS OPEN SLIGHTLY.

NO,IAM REFERRING TO THE THROTTLE PLATES, THE ONES THAT OPEN WHEN YOU ADVANCE THE THROTTLE CONTROL.

Re: CARBURETOR QUESTION?

Initally, you start with all the butterfly's completely closed, so they are in sync. Turn your idle air screws out 1.5 turns to get started. When you get it started, you may have to give a little throttle, and if when you back off to idle, it dies, adjust your idle screw which will open all the butterfly's up at the same rate. It is very important that your carbs are in sync. If you need more help, let me know. Good Luck

Re: CARBURETOR QUESTION?

ON an outboard motor at idle the butterflys should be closed (or closed down to the stopscrew).

Most won't be totally seated to the walls of the throat of the carb because of the stopscrew - there may be about the width of a piece of paper between them - BUT they should NOT be opened by the linkage at idle.

Idle speed is controlled by advanceing the timing via the linkage and adjusting screw and the correct mixture.

Re: CARBURETOR QUESTION?

OK I GOT THE CARBS SYNCHED,ADJUSTED THE IDLE MIXTURE AND IDLE SPEED.ALL THIS OUT OF THE WATER, AND I REALIZE THE REAL TEST IS IN THE WATER. LAUNCHED THE BOAT AND TO MY SURPRISE, IT IDLED AND RAN REASONABLY WELL. OF COURSE I CANT SEEM TO LEAVE WELL ENOUGH ALONE. THE IDLE IS JUST A LITTLE BIT ROUGH. IS THERE ANYTHING I CAN DO TO FINE TUNE IT WITH OUT SCREWING UP THE PROGRESS I HAVE MADE? THANKS

Yes,
While tied off to the dock, slip it into drive at idle, with cover removed and idle mixture screws accessable. Now adjust the idle mixture screws one at a time till it runs smoothest then about 1/4 turn out from there.
