Carburetor Rebuild Question

The '87, 70 HP Johnson was bought from someone who had it sitting outtside for several years. I rebuilt the carbs to eliminate the varnish, etc. and got it running again, but now the carbs leak a small amount of gas and it appears to be coming out of the base of the emulsion pickup tubes. When I rebuilt the carburetors, all of the tubes appeared to be blocked at the ends, so I took a straight pin and cleared the blockage.

When I look in the manual, it says........'check for leaks between the emulsion pickup tube and carburetor body'........'if a leak occurs, blow dry and apply a drop of OMC Ultra Lock at point A'.

Were the tubes supposed to be blocked at the ends and what I cleared w/ a straight pin was the OMC Ultra Lock? Should I take apart the carbs again and block the ends of the emulsion pickup tubes to eliminate the leakage?

Re: Carburetor Rebuild Question

The emulsion tube runs between the fuel bowl and the barrel of the carb.

Have you checked the float level in your carb? Should be even with the top of the fuel bowl when held upsidedown. If the float is set too high, you could get some fuel sloshing out of the emulsion tube simply because you have too much fuel in the bowl.

I believe the manual is referring to potential leaks between the outer wall of the tube and the hole in the carb body that the tube fits into. It is just a friction fit, so could potentially leak I guess.

As an FYI...if you have the black "plastic like" carbs, those tubes can deteriorate over time and start to flake away. Had to replace mine a while back. Tough to find them though as most marines want to sell you the whole carb body...not just the tubes.

Good luck!
