When cleaning a carburettor thoroughly, is it a requirement to remove the core plug and lead shot on the top of the carb?

If so, how do you remove and then replace?

Thanks

led shot can be drilled out with a small drill bit . the plug drill a hole in center then pry out. the carb kit should tell you in the instruction . to git a good cleaning yes i would if i had the replacement parts. papasage

RudeAfrican.... Normally carburetors clog and foul to a point whereas they can be cleaned thoroughly without going to the trouble of removing/replacing the lead shot and core plugs.

If after a thorough cleaning, I might still encounter a problem which I'm sure can be contributed to carburetion.... then I would go to the extra trouble. Since 1960, I've done that twice which gives you a pretty good idea of how necessary that is.

Thanks Joe and Papasage,

In other words it's not routine maintanance to be done everytime you clean the carbs.

My opinion is that, if the core plugs come with the kit, why not use them? They will allow you to clean in areas that may remain dirty and clogged otherwise.

They are easy to remove... Carefully drill a small hole in the plug (don't too deep, just enough to get through the plug). Then insert a small scredriver and pry out. To install... I like to coat the edge of the plug with a thin coating of Sealer 2000 or similar sealer (I suppose most fuel resistant sealers would work). Then install the plug in its bore with the convex radius facing outward. They apply a few modest blows on the face of the plug with a flat punch until it has expanded securely in the bore.
