carpet question

I am installing new carpet in my boat and I'm in the process of removing the old. The old carpet was in very poor condition to start with; more rubber backing than carpet throughout most of the boat. My question is this: is there a product or method of removing the glue and rubber backing remnants? I have been using a putty knife and alot of elbow greese and I'm still having a tough time removing it all. Would it be acceptable to glue the new carpet down on the areas that I can not get the old completly removed?

Thanks,
Trooper251

Re: carpet question

Try applyng heat to the glue or carpet. A heat gun or a propane torch if carefull. Good Luck

Shawn

Re: carpet question

Try some acetone if you really need to get it off :( but scrapping generally get most off  and as long as it not extremely lumpy and you are using good grade carpet with a the proper marine grade backing you dont really need to get it all off. :D

Re: carpet question

Thanks for the replies, I was unsure if heat or chemicals would harm the fiberglass or the gel coat. I have been able to get the majority of it up. The casting decks are fairly clean, It's the floor that is giving me the bigest problem. It just doesn't seem to want to give it up. What's left is fairly smoot though, so I have just about come to the conclusion that if I can't scrape it off, then it should hold the new carpet in place with the help of the adhesive just fine.

Thanks again,
Trooper251

Re: carpet question

Seibel,

Thanks, I have to go to Wal-Mart today and I will pick some up. I just have about half of the floor left, which on a bass boat is not that much, but it just won't let go. This is the original carpet on an '84 MonArk and they must have used the good stuff. I only hope the new will last as long. :D

Thanks again,
Trooper251

Re: carpet question

mellowyellow,

It's just getting started back-up. Kali is 6 months old today and she requires the majority of our attention. We did take the boat out and fish off it a few times last fall and mechanically it is great; now comes the cosmetics. I'm not too concerned with the faded color but want to at least preserve what's left. I had to do something about the carpet, it had seen its last days long ago. With the exception of this last bit I'm trying to get up. Not much carpet left, but the adhesive is not willing to give it up. As soon as I can get the new carpet in I'll post some after pics.

Trp251
