carpet replacement and other stuff

I've been replacing the carpet in my fish & ski and along the way noticed a plastic support that is a bit warped. I'm considering replacing this with a piece of wood. It's a simple piece that is decorative and gives support to 3 cabinets which I use for fishing tackle and miscellaneous items. What type of wood is best?

Without a pic, hard to imagine what it looks like. A hardwood dowel might work, or cut down a stair rung, paint to match.
