I decided to step in some gum at the dock and walk all over my carpet before noticing hot, stretchy, sticky white gum on my burgundy carpet. I picked up some of the citrus, low strength goo gone and it removed the gum easily. Well, the goo gone is a light duty adhesive remover, and, well, the carpet is held down with, you guessed it, adhesive. So, my former gum spots have detached from the decking making wrinkles. There are about four spots in all, each about three inches wide, and 8 or 10 inches long. The carpet is in pretty good shape and I'd like to stick it back down.

Should I:
A. find a syringe and inject some type of adhesive and stick down;
B. cut the wrinkles and properly use outdoor carpet adhesive or contact cement and live with a seam;
C. open to other ideas!!

Anybody fixed carpet wrinkles?

Thanks a bunch!

As a registered nurse, I like the syringe idea best; it's the least invasive. If it doesn't work, then you can go to Plan B. In any case, you will want to get the largest luer lock type syringe you can find (in the hospital we had access to 60cc (2 fluid ounce) syringes that would potentially work for your application. Couple that with the lowest number gauge needle you can find. (The higher the number, the smaller the diameter of the needle). I would not consider anything smaller (in diameter) than a #18 but they make needles as large as #7 (I've never seen one). Sorry, I can't tell you where to find such a beast.

If you do go to Plan B, make a small incision in the air pocket and then use a catheter tip syringe (much easier to find; no needle required) to inject your adhesive.

You can also go to a BBQ store and get one of those big syringes they use to inject marinade in turkeys and such. I've used them on all sorts of projects and they work well.

Re: carpet wrinkle repair

I asked a local carpet shop and the syringe is a standard meathod used by the pros. They suggested that I use dawn detergent to cut through any remaining goo gone and let it dry before I begin. I have the glue, and am now searching for a syringe...

The next time you have to remove gum just rub it with an ice cube and it'll harden up and pull right off.

Or soak it in vegetable oil--that dissolves the gum base and it'll all then wash away with soap and water.
