Have a 1989 Searay Sedan Bridge 30 footer that needs new carpet. I pulled the carpet off one of the engine hatches and the carpet backing looks to have a very thin black rubberized coating on it. Is this necessary or can I uses regular carpeting for home use? I assume that the coating is to prevent water from getting through to the wood flooring, but it really doesn't ever get wet except for an occasional pair of wet feet?

Stands to reason that boat carpet is bound to get wet at some point. If you're recarpeting, I'd go ahead and spend the money to do it with the right product for the job. Just my humble opinion.

No you can't use regular home carpeting! If it gets wet and it will it will hold the water in - turn moldy and help deteriorate whats underneath it. You need an outdor carpet for that. I don't know what stores you have where you are but around here I can get a good grade of blue out door carpet from the local LOwes store that is the same as what was in the boat. They do have a couple of different colors and the price is not too bad. But if you looking for a special color or need to match an existing color - here are a couple of sites to try: www.yourautotrim.com and www.atrim.com. Hope this helps P.S. all carpet needs to be glued down with exterior grade carpet glu!

Thanks but I have to clarify myself. The carpeting is only on the inside behind sliding glass doors and is not like the stuff that is used on bass boats or headliners. The stuff that is in there now is at least 1/2" thick, has stitched backing that appears to be just like home carpeting but with a thin layer of black coating on it. I am not opposed to spend the extra money to purchase the kind with a waterproof coating, but I can not find anything like it online. I can find tons of sites that have the bass boat style of carpet.I guess I could just go to a marine upholstery shop, but pricing is always more competitive online.

Go to any carpet store to get a excellent outdoor or pool carpet in any color or design. I always put boat carpet down with SS or Monel staples. On my own or a person who wants it right I put it down with removable snaps. The holes in the deck are always sealed with Epoxy to prevent wood rot.

Hi All<br /><br />Just replaced the boat carpet on my bayliner and I used a 20oz carpet, I looked at the home stores but decided to buy real marine carpet rather than an outdoor carpet. From what I've been able to find regular outdoor carpet is much less durable. The boat carpet I purchased is much thicker and I had read that outdoor carpet has around 2-3 in terms of lifespan before the backing will deteriorate. I bought the carpet from an online company and they shipped it free which is pretty slick.

Home Depot and Lowe's both carry Marine carpet...and its fairly cheap
