I purchased some type of Sears aluminum cartop boat (yr.1971) that only gets 4 ft wide in the middle (I assume to fit in the back of a pick up truck) and has a flat (rear) bottom, round sides and a pretty low transom.

I have a 15hp Johnson that I fit on it, and was looking for some sort of performance boat when motor and boat are combined.
That's not the case. The boat goes ok with 3 light people in it, but never hops out of the water and gets on a true efficient plane. It's always kind of semi-displacement hull.
And with one person at full throttle, the boat is hopping all over the place and I can't control it very well at all.

I realise that if my hull had a sharp transom and sides, Was about 5-6 ft wide and had some sort of a V hull design, this boat would perfom rather well with a 15hp and a good load. I can't forget that a wider, bigger boat has a greater dry weight than a li'll skinny pencil of a boat.

Any other thoughts on 12-14 ft aluminum car toppers that perhaps have a newer hull design and what the performance is like.

I'm just debating wether I should sell this one and get a wider more heavy duty cartop.
