We have an '90 Carver Santego 3867 and every time we flush the head there's a strong sewer smell on the outside of the vessel. We've had the waste tank flush (emptied) thinking that it was probably full but it still continues to smell every time we flush the head. We've also poured in the black water chemicals which are supposed to neutralize the odors but that didn't help. Then we tried 1 whole gallon of vinegar - again no help. The Key thing to remember is that the odors are only present from the EXTERIOR of the vessel after we flush the head - No smell whatsoever on the interior - ANY IDEAS OUT THERE???

The boat is slipped and not easily removed from the water.

Re: Carver Sewer Smell

You may want to try emptying the holding tank and putting in a little water, and then a lot of bleach and just let it sit for a few days. Then do two or three complete fills/pumpouts and then just resume with normal RV tank chem's and see how it turns out.

The only time I've heard of external sewer odor problems has been with regard to the macerator in use where it shouldn't be (**** near other boats and in the bay).

Re: Carver Sewer Smell

SeaLand makes a vent filter I have on one boat. They also have holding tank deodorizor which contains bacteria that promotes breakdown of solids. I would use nothing else in my holding tank. I have come across many holding tanks that smell when flushing and most are caused by improper treatment. Nothing should ever go into a holding tank that doesn't come from the body (except approved toilet paper) or an approved holding tank chemical. Also never use cleaners in your head not approved for holding tanks. Most cleaners will kill the bacteria in the tank. These bacteria are neccessary to keep the tank healthy.

Very common problem that can be easily solved. If she were mine....I would empty the tank, add some holding tank treatment, fill her up with water, go boating and hit a few wakes, shake her up a little, pump- out tank, then add a little more treatment to her.

Good Luck!
