Catfish don't like rusty hooks?

Has anyone ever heard of this? I'm beginning to believe it is true (I heard of it from old timers)..

Had several limb lines out this weekend.. About a dozen had stainless steel hooks and another dozen had circle hooks on them which I thought were in pretty good shape... All baited with gold fish..

After pulling out 8 nice fish (6 channel, 1 blue, and 1 flat) I noticed that all of them came off of the lines with the ss hooks.. None off of the circles, and after closer inspection there is some rust on all of them around the eye of the hooks.. Last year they were brand new and rust free and I did catch some fish on them then, but now it makes me wonder...

Is this just freak thing?

Hmmmm. Never heard of it but it makes sense.

Catfish are supersensitive to electric and electromagnetic fields.. . how they find some of their food in murky water.

Could be that the rust creates a field that repels them.

Checked the lines again this morning...
Nothing on the circle hooks and the bait was still in good shape except for a few...
Caught 4 more channel on the SS...

I'm convinced!

I am a big fan of super sharp hooks. I would venture to say a rusty hook is not a sharp hook!
My expierience with circle hooks, is the fish hooks himself.

Try this, wrap a small piece of aluminum foil around the shank of one of the rusty hooks and see what happens.

KC, chunk those ole hooks get with the red tube lure with the string, the float up and you get to pick. Kidding but the rusty hook no fish rule was told to me by my granddad about 40 years ago.

KC, Meant to tell you that he also told me to use Ivory soap on the limb lines and it really works on the old catfish.

Warm the Ivory soap up in the oven and it will cut like hot butter.

Well I don't know about the rusty part, but I never have much luck with the circle hooks. They seem to steal the bait from them easier.Where is the best place to get gold fish down that way? I would like to find some place to get them a bit cheaper. We have to give 6 to 8 $ a dozen up in this part of Mo.I am going to set some lines out soon. I'm on the 525 mile marker. Just about to the Ia. line.I just got a new boat, and I need to get some fish smell in it.

hoot,

My source probably isn't much better... But he sells them by the pound... Big goldfish add up really quick, but I've been able to get many 4-5" goldies that way (two dozen or more) for around $12-16 bones... I guess it's all the same...

Re: Catfish don't like rusty hooks?

I just got back from the cabin. I only set one line sat. night. I put on 1 gold fish and one dead blue gill. somthing took the blue gill. I'm trying to get some bait from ponds with traps, but that isn't working very good. Thing sure do change. A fiew years ago we could get bluegill by the buckets full. Most of our ponds are full of mud now. I guess I'll just have to do it the easy way , and buy some gold fish. at 6 bucks a doz. The river conditions arn't realy good yet up in our neck of the woods.I cought two big carp on rod and reel, and one small flathead. They are still there for some one to catch again. They sure do put up a fight. [The carp that is.]
