I would like to warn all boaters like myself who don't know! Always wear proper hand protection, rubber gloves/mechanics gloves when working on a stopped up or dirty bilge. I stuck a rotten piece of wood under my finger nail and got stuck my a couple of screws while replacing a bilge pump on a Monday. Wednesday I was in the hospital for observation because of an infection. It was a precaution by my Doctor because of the bad bugs in the bay near Galveston Tx. My finger got swollen and there was a red line running up my arm. I was released Thursday and all was fine medication helped but it could been a lot worse. JUST FOR THOSE WHO DIDN'T KNOW!!!

I hate reaching into bildges... If it isn't the random screw that gets you, it will be the unfinished shards of fiberglass sticking out. They will go through you about as easily as a hypodermic needle!

Blood poisoning is no joke...neither is an infection from stagnant water. :(

Glad to hear you've got a good doctor.

I just keep my bildge spaces clean and dry.

Was it blocked up or do you normally have a goop filled bilge? Glad all turned out ok.

Re: Caution: Bilge water

red line = blood poisoning!
A stick under water is like a hypodermic needle filled with whatever liquid you're in.
I stepped on a rusty deck spike 2 weeks ago, almost came through the top of my foot. When I went to get my tetanus shot, and pills the size of marshmallows, the doctor said that most infections from stepping on nails is more from the germs in the dirty old tennis shoe than the nail itself.

Re: Caution: Bilge water

Thanks a lot for the concern guys. The bilge pump stopped working and I was working in a tight spot. The reason was the bilge was full of junk which looked like rotten wood and acorns. The previous owner said the deck was recently replaced so I hope it was leftover trash not more rot.
