I would have it fixed. In reverse It's gotta be sucking air. I look at my cavitation plates going 40KMPH and theres a lot of water passing by. I cant imagine that with that much metal missing your prop is performing as it should.

Now most of the low pressure water is at the leading edge of the prop. There you have a good amount of cavitation plate remaining. It might be OK but I'd still have it repaired.

the lower unit is not that hard to remove and have a plate welded in.. it would not be that expensive really

Thanks guys, ya that's what I was thinking about hurting the performance, I just talked to a guy about welding it. I'm pulling the bottom end anyways to replace the pump, so I'll have it welded then.

I would compare the cost vs installing a whale tail and trimming it down a bit.
It would do the same thing.

I think id go with the Hydro-fin and just wait till i found a different lower housing. then have it rebuilt at the same time.
With the tail your not even gonna know its gone. It may be fine as is too.

Ya, that would be ok eh? I guess just bolt them over the broken spot?

So any Ideas on the Hydro-fin, are they supposed to be bolted that far back? I thought they were supposed to be farther foward? Also do those fins make much difference? Which ones would you guys recommend for my motor. 1980 115 Johnson

The hydrofoils are a great moneymaker for the retailers, produce a lot of drag and are a real pain on turns.

That's an easy welding repair for a competent welder. Find a good prop shop and they can fix that.

Another thought, if I got to bolt them down over the broken area, there will be no spot to bolt through?

ha ha ha, that's only about 100% different then what they claim. If that's the case I don't want them, I'll just get it welded.

Not to disagree, but I disagree..
I added one and there is a whole wonderful new out there for my little boat now. It plains better, drives better, and gets better mileage. I have not one regret for buying it. I would gladly spend the money again if needed.

As to the real post, if you boat handles good now id go with a small one, or as small of one as will cover the break. The way mine is should cover the break and bolt on fine.
I have a String-ray Hydrofoil. Looks like a T

I made my own hydrofoil out of 1/4" solid aluminum. Used an old hydrofoil as a template, just made mine smaller. Less drag than the store bought one, but still acts the same way. Boat planes out in a heartbeat, corners better, and have not noticed much of a loss in top end speed.
