Just got the Autocad drawings back from our shop. Console is about to begin. I'm excited.

In talking to the "expert" down at the lumber yard, he convinced me to go with MDO (medium density overlay) instead of ACX. I have this in my shop and I like it. According to him, MDO is what the state uses for highway signs and as long as it is sealed it will last. Downside is that a 4x8 sheet is a couple of pounds heavier. Price was $42/sheet for 1/2". ACX was $35. Console will use slightly more than 2 sheets.

Tonight the shop foreman at work has agreed to cut all pieces. I'll dry fit the console and then paint. Going with epoxy paint.

Yesterday, I finished painting the hull and it came out okay. I had to follow somebody else's lines and they are not perfectly straight. Then again, it's bottom paint so who really cares.

I'll post pix as soon as I can.

Wow! Hermit, that is a cool pilot house.

I never did call about those Parker consoles as I was afraid I'd buy one. I'd have to wait for the bridge to go up every morning to get out with a t-top. Right now I can get out of the harbor at mid tide without using the bridge. Striper season and I'm out before the sun. Bridge doesn't open until 6-7.

My boat is outside now too. I merely have access to shops for building things. Of course, the shops here make ROV's etc so they are pretty impressive.

I just looked through that photo album. The shovel picture made me cringe.

Cut all the pieces last night in the shop. Amazing the difference a good shop person can make. Took us less than an hour.

I'm going to dry fit tonight and take pictures.

Funny how different things are from the drawings in real life. We cut the side panels first and I had a moment of "can that be right?". The demensions were taken from current console with minor changes.

Still painting the pieces for the console. Sure takes longer than planned. As my painter buddy said, "spend time now and be happy or don't and be unhappy until you do it again".

Went to the shop this morning and ordered all the aluminum pieces to bolt it all up. Going to thru bolt with finish washers on the exterior. Will hopefully look like rivets.

Looks pretty good. Is it very heavy?

JasonJ,
It's about 20-25lbs. The current console is slightly less.

I have a question for you. Did you seal the seams of your console? I'm thinking I should at least put Life Caulk(tm) in the seams.

Cool. I think 5200 is more permanent than I want. I'm going to try LifeCaulk(tm) in combination with the aluminum anlges and through bolts.

Re: CC Project begins

PS
The part that scares me is cutting all the holes for gauges etc.............one slip up and all that work is for naught.

It may be a help to keep the drill in place if you put a piece of heavy tape where you want to start the hole. Keeps the drill from wandering.. Also starting off by making a small hole makes things easier to control.

Also, drills for wood work have a sharper tip and like to stay where you put it.

UU,

Thanks for the tips. I'm actually more concerned about placement. I made cardboard templates of all my gauges and will place the steering wheel first. Then I'll move the gauges around until I'm happy. Of course I won't know for sure until I'm out fishing.............

I see. If you can, make scans/prints of your instruments, cut them out and place the paper templates. Best way to decide what goes where.

Re: CC Project begins

Mellow,
I hear ya. I did not save money by doing it myself, that is for sure. However, it's setup the way I want and that's my main reason for doing it. For the most part it was fun.

I must be nuts. Last Winter I rebuilt my Harley from the frame up and this year I build a console. I'm afraid of what will happen next year.
