Guy down the road has a CD-17, says it's 5 1/2 horse on the cowl. Does the CD translate to a 1986? or am I missing something?

You are trying to apply the "INTRODUCES" code to a much older motor. it only came in in 1980

CD 17 is a 5.5hp from 1960

Look at THIS SITE for explanations of the model number codes since 1980 and list of earlier model numbers
