cd, coil, or warmup issue

Howdy,

I have a 1982 chrysler 75 hp model 758h2d serial # 1302. motor cranks right and runs in hot or cold weather, but the colder the lake water the longer it takes for all 3 cylinders to run. It seems to start all three and within a minute or so two cylinders drop and runs only on one cylinder. I can motor out on the lake and after a while (depending on the water temp) a second cylinder starts firing and then a little quicker after that the 3 starts firing. Before each cylinder starts firirng that cylinder starts intermittent firing then it finally catches and never misses the rest of the day. This has been very consistent. If I stay with it, she’ll come around and run like a champ. No more trouble once all 3 get going. One note here, I have made a modification by pulling the plug just above the thermostat and running a line to the cowling. Poor mans pee hole. Plugs are not fouling or crudding up. Am I not letting it get warm enough? Is it a coil or cd issue? Next trip I am going to plug the pee hole I made to see if it makes any difference. If anything I think it will only shorten the time for all three to fire. Again, once its going, she runs perfect. Running hole to hole bass fishing or skiing.

Thanks in advance for the help

What is the compression like?
Spotless plugs on a 2cycle is not exactly a good thing. What i mean is, if they look new after 20hours or so, (by that, i mean zero discoloring,no soot, ect), it may be a water ingestion problem which would be "steam-cleaning" them.

Or it could be a lean condidtion, or a fuel delivery problem consisting of any of the following ,or a combination of any of the following:
Inproper fuel delivery caused by low compression ,obstruction in the fuel lines, hole in the fuel line or fittings, fuel pump diaphram leak, fuel pump check valve sticking in the cold weather.
Obstruction in one or two carbs.
If it freezes where you are, water in the fuel system will freeze, and thaw gradually as gas squeezes-by the ice...That never happens where I live, but I've read where it does north of here.

Re: cd, coil, or warmup issue

Thanks for the reply. last compression check was 155, 150, and 155. i checked the head for warpage and it was .004" out. had it leveled down .010" and absolutely nothing changed in the symptoms. it hardly freezes around here. that was a good idea about freezing though. the fact that it runs so well after all 3 get going has me bumfuzzled. when a cd or coil or stator goes out, do they just quit or do they sputter like mine for a while? if the cd was not so expensive i would just change it out and go on.

Re: cd, coil, or warmup issue

I plugged up the pee hole modification I had made. Took the boat out last Saturday to do a little fishing but mainly to figure this motor thing out. Got the boat off the trailor and tied up to the dock. I usually kill the motor and then put the truck up. This time I left the motor running on high idle the entire time I was putting the truck and trailor up. There was nobody around so I wasn’t annoying anyone. After pushing away from the dock and getting out of the no-wake zone, it seems as if the warm up issue has something to do with it. On one cylinder she wont plane. On two she will plane and run about 1/3 speed. When I throttled her up she planed out (two cylinders) and in just a short time (about 2 minutes) she was sputtering and finally kicked in on all three. No more problems the rest of the day. I could motor to a spot, fish a while, crank up and go to another spot. Anyone got any ideas? I am almost tempted to leave it alone and take longe warm-ups.
