Boy oh Boy, I've got a stack of CD-R's that just won't burn in my drive...

I insert the disc, but the drive won't recognize that there's a disc in the drive...

I've tried Maxell (all worked), Memorex 40x max(no good), Philips 40x and 48x(10 of the 40x max worked, and 10 48x max did'nt) and TDK 48x max(so far so good)...What gives?...

Anyone know any "tricks" to make em' work?...

My drive's speed is 24 X 10 X 40 X max and I think the drive is mfg'd. by Sanyo.... All the CD-R's are 40 X compatable or better...

WHat software are you using to burn them??

I had similar problem last year with a 12x burner. It was suggested I try different software. But most burners don't have alot of flexability on software. And buying the software alone is very pricey.

I bought a new TDK 32/10/40 burner with their VeloCD software for $75. It works flawlessly everytime (knock knock). I am still using the old 16x certified cd's, as I bought 300 of them for under $10 way back when. They burn fine at the higher speeds.

My only suggestions are clean your burner and try different software if possible.

SnapperBait, try lowering the max burn rate on the CD burner. Double left click on MY COMPUTER, then right click on the CD burner ICON, then select PROPERTIES, then SETTINGS, reduce the WRITE SPEED and try it again. If that doesn't do it I has a similar problem recognising CD'Rs in a HP-8200e drive, seems to me I had to erase the CD first because it was formatted with a non-compatible system. Good luck.

Hi snapperbait

Typically, the burner "Firmware" is responsible for recognizing media (CD-R's).
Since you burner is aging, it doesn't recognize all the newer media types out there.

>determine the burner manufacturer
>track down an updated "firmware" and flash utility from their website
>update the firmware
>uninstall your burner software
>go to NERO and download their latest Nero5 software

This will give you the "Best of the Best". :)

UPDATE:

Thanks Guys....

Well, I've tried all your suggestions with the same results... Drive does not recognize that there is a Cd-r in the drive... Go to burn a disc and it just spits it back out and says "Please insert disc into drive"...

TDK's will burn, but none of the others...

The drive is a Samsung CD-R/RW model # SW-224B with a manufacturing date 7/1/2001..

I've had the computer about 6 months and it did this from day 1... Windows XP home ed.

I tried the Memorex cd-r's in another drive on my Pops' computer that's old as dirt (5 years old) and it worked perfectly... Slow, but perfectly...

Cleaned the drive...
Got an updated "firmware" R-203 from Samsung...
Changed speed...
Different software...
Nero...

Nuttin' :(

Well, it isn't worth losing too much sleep over as these things have gotten soooo cheap to replace. I never want to replace if I don't need to, but if the aggravation level climbs too high, I would spend $60 at BestBuy and give it a try.

Good luck.

Re: CD-R's that won't burn?..

Seeing Warhorse's post thanking Schematic for his efforts reminded me that I too need to thank him, and Roscoe, and SlowlySinking as well....

Unfortunately for yours truly, the problem still occurs after I did exactly as Schematic instructed and installed the 205 firmware from the link, uninstalled HP record now, and downloaded the trial version of Nero5....

Guess I need a new CD-RW drive....

I do have one question though, would the Windows system driver for the drive have anything to do with the problem?...

Snapperbait

Some burners are really fussy to media types. You've done all you can do. (I've been there) The windows driver for the burner is unrelated to your issue. If you have 100 unuseable disks, I'd recommend getting a new burner to utilize them. "LG" is a good value.
:)
